this is a very looooong post.
they had to bring in a big crane to do it.
they brought lots more equipment, the chipper, a bobcat, multiple trucks to fill with woodchips
a truck for the trunks that were too large to chip, and a stump grinder
they started by hoisting up a guy with the crane and lowering him down into the tree
he tied off ropes to a branch, then sawed the branch loose. the crane is lifting out the first branch. you can see how enormous this tree is.
because of large existing trees in their front yard, they had to lift the branch back to the left...
swing it towards their neighbors house
up over the neighbors house
the wind is blowing leaves everywhere
around to the street in front
and down it comes
this branch alone could have been a whole tree!
it takes up the whole street
they had a special claw on the bobcat to help drag the cut branches around
and to help lift branches into the chipper
chippin' the wood
this tree is so big you cant hardly tell that such a gigantic branch was removed
another branch
lifted all the way around
and down. again, the branch could have been a whole tree just by itself
first truck full of woodchips
truck number two
the dogs watched the whole thing. hell, i pulled up a chair and sat and watched, fascinated. i've never seen such a huge tree come down.
another huge branch cut free
and lifted around by the crane
and up and over
up up and away
and down to the street.
again, big enough to be a tree on its own.
down goes the guy into the tree again
the bobcat hauling the tree trunks
another branch
another tree trunk
this is the truck they lifted all the big tree trunks into
it looked like a fun thing to operate
another branch
another claw full of tree trunks
another branch
with the bobcat dragging it to the chipper
theres the guy being lowered into the tree again
last branch!
up and over
and down
clean up involved a leaf blower and rakes and forks. they did a pretty darn good job cleaning up all those leaves and twigs.
i stayed and watched for 3 hours, but then had to go to the library. i didnt see what they did to the stump/lower trunk in the backyard. i'm sad to see such a huge tree come down, but they have four large trees in their front yard, and three more in their backyard! it would be difficult for them to have any kind of vegetable garden with so much shade. but it really was neat to see how they took the tree down so quickly and with such coordination.
